Tra gli album usciti quest’anno sull’etichetta tedesca Unique Records, probabilmente è Scratch My Itch (Gratta dove mi prude), l’atteso secondo album del collettivo olandese The Soul Snatchers di inizio 2012, ad essere il mio preferito. Non solo perché la band dimostra chiaramente di aver interiorizzato perbene le lezioni d’oltreoceano per quanto riguarda il funk & soul, con un sound spiccatamente inspirato al periodo a cavallo tra la fine degli anni 60 e i primi 70, ma anche perché dall’inizio alla fine, l’album copre quasi tutte le basi di quel che cerco in un disco. Brano per il dancefloor in un prossimo dj set, c’è: l’uptempo e contagiosissimo Good To Me che invoglierebbe persino un cadavere a ballare. Brano funky soul da polleggio in una giornata calda e afosa, c’è: il bluesy Who I Am. Pezzo Hammond groove, eh beh: Right Track col suo semplice ma efficace riff ripetitivo e l’organo che la comanda. Strumentale da colonna sonora, ma certo: The Chase, ovvero l’inseguimento, un chiaro riferimento alla corrente blaxploitation che ha sfornato tanti film quanto dischi ormai cult. Brano soul anni 60 con un pò di swing: Good & Plenty, che chiude il disco. In totale 13 tracce fresche come la terra d’origine della band, un cocktail ben equilibrato di gustosi ritmi, fiati e groove in cui The Soul Snatchers interpretano in maniera convincente e piuttosto fedele le sonorità classiche del funk & soul. Se avete la scimmia di questi generi allora Scratch My Itch vi farà passare il prurito!

Among the albums that have come out this year on German label Unique Records, Scratch My Itch, the awaited second album by Dutch collective The Soul Snatchers out at the beginning of 2012, is probably my favorite. Not only because the band clearly proves to have internalized the funk & soul lessons from across the pond, with a sound that is inspired by the late 60′s and early 70′s, but also because, from start to finish, this album covers all the bases of what I look for in a full-length. Track for the dancefloor in my next dj set, check: the uptempo and very contagious Good To Me that would make even a corpse wanna dance. Funky soul track to chill in a hot and lazy day, check: the bluesy Who I Am. A Hammond groover, well, Right Track with its simple but effective riff and the Hammond taking over. Instrumental soundtrack, of course The Chase, a clear reference to the blaxploitation era that churned out as many cult movies as scores. 60s style soul track with a bit of swing: Good & Plenty, that concludes the album. In total 13 songs that are as cool as the band’s homeland, a well-balanced cocktail of tasty rhythms, horns and grooves with which The Soul Snatchers interpret in a convincing and rather faithful manner the classic sounds of funk & soul. If you’re a funk junkie, then Scratch My itch will satisfy your cravings!
